Single vs. Dual-Basket Air Fryers: Plan Around Dinner
October 15, 2026
Compare one larger cooking surface with two separate zones. Ninja AF181 and DZ201 examples clarify basket area, dinner timing, counter space and cleanup.
Choose one larger basket when your usual meal needs an uninterrupted cooking surface. Choose two baskets when you regularly need separate settings for a main and a side. The deciding question is whether each food fits its own basket, not which box advertises more quarts.
The U.S. Ninja AF181 and DZ201 make that tradeoff concrete. The 6.5-quart AF181 has one cooking zone. The 8-quart DZ201 divides its capacity between two 4-quart baskets. Neither is an automatic upgrade for every dinner.
Research-based comparison, checked October 15, 2026. We have not cooked with or measured these appliances. Basket-area figures below are attributed to RTINGS; operating and care details come from Ninja's documents and the identified U.S. listings.
Prices, sellers and availability can change. Check the exact model and selected option before ordering.
- One continuous cooking surface: Consider the gray AF181 if you usually want one cooking program and fewer removable pieces. Confirm the shape and dimensions of anything you want to cook whole. Check the Ninja AF181 on Amazon.
- Two separate programs: Consider the gray 8-quart DZ201 if both foods fit their individual baskets and separate settings would solve a recurring dinner problem. Check the Ninja DZ201 on Amazon.
Start with three dinners you actually make
Write down the main and side for three ordinary nights. For each, ask whether the foods need different temperatures, different finish times, or more flat space than your present appliance provides.
- One broad item: Prioritize its width, length and height. A larger total capacity split into separate drawers cannot create one wider opening.
- Two foods with different instructions: Separate controls may be useful, provided each portion fits its assigned basket.
- A side while the main cooks elsewhere: Your existing single-basket fryer may already do the job. Replacing it adds little if timing is not the problem.

Compare usable area per basket, then the total
RTINGS reports 62.5 square inches for its Canadian AF181C test sample, not a separately measured U.S. AF181. Its DZ201 measurements show 43.4 square inches per basket and 86.7 square inches in total. These rounded figures are RTINGS' measurements, not ours. The U.S. AF181's exact basket area remains unverified here.
The AF181C result is a same-series reference, not proof that the U.S. AF181 has more usable area than either DZ201 basket. The structural choice remains one continuous basket versus two separate baskets. You cannot move the dividing wall or put a wide item across both DZ201 drawers.

For a whole item, check the actual cooking surface. Measure the food or approved dish at its widest points. Compare it with the basket at the crisper-plate level, including rounded corners, taper and usable height. We have not verified a complete inner length-by-width drawing for either model, so this guide does not promise that a pizza, whole chicken or particular pan will fit. Do not treat an accessory seller's liner dimensions as the appliance's usable dimensions.
Area sources: RTINGS' AF181-series review (AF181C test sample) and RTINGS' DZ201 measurements. We are using their area data, not adopting their ratings or claiming our own performance test.
Two baskets can use the same temperature or different settings
The DZ201 does not require different temperatures in its two baskets. Match Cook copies the function, temperature and time from one zone to the other. If the temperatures match but the times differ, set each zone separately instead.
Smart Finish coordinates the scheduled end time. It starts the longer program first and holds the shorter one until the remaining times match. That is useful for dinner planning, but it does not measure whether your food is done.

One important DZ201 exception: The Ninja manufacturer manual reviewed limits Air Broil to one zone at a time and excludes it from Match Cook. For synchronized shaking pauses, the manual directs you to pause both zones. Do not assume every two-basket model has identical restrictions.
In the AF181, foods sharing the basket share one selected cooking program. Two foods may still work together when their instructions are compatible, but the machine cannot give them independent temperatures. Two drawers buy control separation; they do not guarantee a better result or a shorter dinner.
Check counter space beyond the appliance's outline
The AF181's published body dimensions are 11.3 inches wide × 14.92 deep × 12.01 high. The DZ201 U.S. listing gives 15.63 inches wide × 13.86 deep × 12.4 high. In these specifications, the dual-basket model is wider, while the single-basket model is deeper. Neither set includes a complete working-space plan.
Allow room to pull the drawers out, put hot parts on a heat-resistant surface and reach the controls. The DZ201 manufacturer manual reviewed requires at least 6 inches above and on all sides for airflow. The AF181 manual calls for adequate clearance above and on all sides without giving a numeric distance in the copy reviewed. Follow the instructions supplied with your exact appliance; do not squeeze either into a close-fitting cubby.
The U.S. AF181 is rated at 1,750 watts; the DZ201 at 1,690 watts. These are whole-appliance ratings, not a promise of that wattage in each basket or an energy-cost comparison. Both manuals prohibit extension cords.
One basket means two main removable parts; two means four
For the standard air-frying setup, count the basket and its crisper plate. Using the AF181 gives you one of each. Using both DZ201 zones gives you two of each. Optional racks, utensils and dishes are outside this count.

Both manuals allow the baskets and crisper plates in the dishwasher, while recommending hand-washing the baskets to extend their life. Unplug and let the appliance cool before cleaning. The main unit must not be immersed or put in the dishwasher.
Before buying, think through where the used parts will go. A broad basket may be awkward in a small sink; two narrower baskets still need separate rack space. We have not measured either model's dishwasher fit or cleaning time.
Which choice solves your dinner problem?
- Choose the AF181 when one uninterrupted surface, one program and a smaller parts count match your routine. Its 6.5-quart label is not a guarantee that your largest item fits.
- Choose the DZ201 when two independently controlled foods are a frequent need, each portion fits a separate basket, and you can accommodate the wider body and extra pieces. Do not buy it expecting one continuous 8-quart cooking space.
- Keep what you have when the air fryer handles a side while another appliance handles the main, or when occasional batches are acceptable. Buy only after identifying the specific space or timing problem a replacement would solve.
These are two representative U.S. models, not a best-air-fryer ranking. AF181 is not AF182AMZ, AF180UK or AF181C; DZ201 is not DZ401, DZ801 or DZ901. Check the model, gray finish and basket configuration after any listing option change.
