Resideo RWD21: Is a Local Leak Alarm Enough Under Your Sink?

White round Resideo RWD21 water leak alarm with red WATER LEAK ALARM lettering, shown from above at an angle.

Buy the Resideo RWD21 only if a local audible leak warning is enough for your sink area. Skip it if you need a phone notification while away or a system that shuts off the water. This guide covers the white, single-alarm pack.

The main drawback is simple: it sounds an alarm at the leak, but someone still has to notice it and respond. Do not count on hearing it from every room or on it preventing water damage.

Decide what the warning needs to do

The RWD21 is a reusable spot detector. It makes sense when you want an audible warning near a sink and accept its limits. It does not send phone alerts or stop a leak. If you already have a working detector in that location that meets your needs, there is no reason to buy a duplicate.

Decision diagram: choose the RWD21 for a local audible warning, another detector for phone alerts, or a shutoff system to stop water automatically.
Choose the response you need first. An audible warning still requires someone to notice and act.

Choose the spot before buying

The manual says to place the alarm upright where a leak may occur. Both sensors on the bottom must touch water to activate it. Being somewhere inside the sink cabinet is not enough if leaking water never reaches the alarm.

Do not place it on metal or another conductive surface: the manual warns that it may sound without water present. Check the intended surface before buying rather than assuming a metal tray is a suitable base.

Allow for the battery and upkeep

You need one 9V battery, which is not included. The manual uses a coin to open the battery door; attach the leads to the appropriate terminals and keep the O-ring seal in place when reassembling the unit.

To disarm it, remove it from the water or remove the battery. Let it dry completely before reuse; the manual also suggests replacing the battery then. Follow the included instructions, and address the source of any leak separately.

Check the single-alarm selection

Look for Resideo RWD21, white, Pack of 1. The linked selection is one alarm, not the six-pack. It is a narrow purchase for one chosen spot, not whole-room coverage.
