Packing Paper or Bubble Wrap for Moving Dishes?

The short answer

Start with clean, unprinted packing paper for everyday plates, bowls and mugs. Use it to wrap pieces and fill gaps; add bubble cushioning and separation for delicate items. Both need a sound box and secure packing.

Choose the U-Haul Newsprint Packing Paper, 200 Sheet Pack if you need that much fresh paper. Skip it if your usable supplies or your mover's materials cover the job; buy a smaller pack for a handful of dishes.

Choose materials for the pieces you have

Everyday dishes: Plain packing paper handles wrapping and gap filling. Reserve enough for both jobs.

Thin stems, delicate handles and fragile glassware: Add cushioning and separation. Consider bubble cushioning and a divided dish or glass box, but check that each wrapped piece fits the compartment before buying dividers.

Supplies already at home: Count clean leftover sheets and inspect bubble cushioning. Don't count torn, dirty or badly flattened material as usable.

Irreplaceable pieces or uncertain finishes: Ask a qualified packer or the item's maker. This everyday-dish guide isn't a preservation plan for antiques or artwork.

Paper is used for wrapping and filling gaps; bubble cushioning provides an additional cushioning layer for delicate pieces.

Our paper pick: U-Haul's 200-sheet pack

U-Haul's WP pack contains a minimum of 200 ink-free sheets, approximately 24 × 30 inches. The pre-cut sheets suit ordinary household wrapping and box filling without cutting paper off a roll.

200 sheets doesn't mean 200 dishes or an entire apartment. Piece size, extra layers and box filling change how much you need. U-Haul says this paper isn't intended for long-term preservation of documents or artwork; an “acid-free” description doesn't make it an archival recommendation.

How much paper should you order?

Count everyday dishes and pieces needing extra cushioning separately, excluding anything your mover will pack. If you have suitable paper, wrap a representative sample of each type and note the sheets used. Don't apply one mug's allowance to serving bowls or stemware.

Use those notes and the number of pieces remaining to estimate wrapping needs. Separately allow for cushioning the box, filling gaps and rewrapping, then subtract usable supplies on hand. There's no universal extra percentage. This is a shopping estimate, not a transport test or protection guarantee.

If you'd leave most of a pack unused, compare a smaller quantity locally. For larger needs, compare equivalent sheet sizes and total delivered costs.

Pack without crowding or pressure

  1. Prepare a sound, suitable box. Follow its assembly instructions and keep the finished load manageable. Extra paper won't fix a weak box.
  2. Wrap each dish. Protect handles and vulnerable parts. Tape wrapping to itself, keeping tape off finishes. Place wrapped plates on edge rather than in a flat stack.
  3. Cushion and separate. Cushion the bottom and fill gaps so pieces don't knock together. Follow divided-kit instructions; never force an oversized wrapped item into a cell.
  4. Close without pressure. Leave room for upper cushioning and normal closure. Repack an overfilled box instead of pressing down on dishes. Label the contents and keep heavy loads off the top.

Use clean, unprinted paper for direct wrapping. Used newspaper can transfer ink, even though unprinted packing paper may also be called “newsprint.” For special shapes and detailed steps, consult U-Pack's dish-packing instructions and U-Haul's kitchen-packing guide.

How we chose

We used published U-Haul, U-Pack and Home Depot guidance and U-Haul's WP specifications, reviewed October 16, 2026, plus the exact Amazon listing record checked October 15. We haven't tested breakage resistance or packed capacity, compared brand performance or live offers, or selected a bubble-wrap SKU.
