Choose a pet-food container around the full original bag, the room needed to open it and a cleaning routine you can manage. A capacity stated in pounds does not prove that your bag will fit. If your current storage is secure, cool, dry and easy to use, another bin may add little.
Start with the bag you actually buy
FDA recommends keeping pet food in its original packaging and placing the entire dry-food bag inside an outer container when using one. Keep the product and manufacturer, UPC, lot number and best-by date accessible.
Measure your full bag's widest width, depth and height with its normal closure. Include the folded top or clip you use. Record those dimensions rather than converting the food's weight into a container size.
Check three kinds of space
- Inside: compare the bag with the usable interior and narrowest opening, not the container's outside dimensions. Check that the bag can go in and come out, and that the lid and any mounted scoop can close without crushing the closure.
- At feeding time: allow room to open both the outer lid and the bag, reach the food and put everything back. A bin that fits beneath a shelf while closed may be awkward to use there.
- At cleaning time: plan how to remove the empty bag and any removable inner bucket, carry parts to your cleaning area and leave them to dry. Do not choose a location that blocks those movements.
One medium can to consider conditionally
The simplehuman Medium Pet Food Can in Brushed, model CW1887, has a clamping handle, rear-hinged lid, lid-mounted magnetic scoop and removable inner bucket. Its confirmed closed outside dimensions are 10.4 inches wide × 18.1 deep × 19.4 high.
Those figures screen the space it occupies while closed. We did not obtain usable internal dimensions, the narrowest opening or full open-lid height. Confirm these for your actual bag and location before choosing it; its advertised food-weight capacity cannot settle that decision.

Leave room for washing and drying
FDA advises washing and drying the container between bags, and washing and drying scoops after each use, reserving them for pet food. The checked Amazon listing specifies hand washing. Follow the actual product's part-care instructions; we have not verified dishwasher use or a chemical-cleaning procedure for this model.
Store dry food in a cool, dry place below 80°F. If your pet can get into the food, use a secure location it cannot access rather than relying on a container's latch alone.
Make the purchase decision
- Keep what works: an adequate existing arrangement needs no decorative upgrade.
- Consider the can: the actual bag, daily access and cleaning space all check out.
- Wait: internal fit or open-lid clearance is unknown. Ask for the exact model's measurements before ordering.
