OXO Handheld Mandoline: Buy It or Keep Your Knife?
Need thin, flat slices often? Weigh the OXO 1119100’s three settings against holder-assisted handling, cleanup and the knife or slicer you already own.
If thin, flat fruit or vegetable slices are part of your regular cooking, a handheld mandoline is worth considering. Start with a meal you already make, such as cucumber salad or potato gratin, and the thickness you want. Keep your knife or existing slicer if it already gives you the slices you like.
This guide covers the OXO Good Grips Hand-Held Mandoline Slicer, model 1119100: one slicer with its food holder. The buying decision is whether three slice settings suit a recurring job well enough to justify holder-assisted handling, cleanup and storage.
Match the settings to your usual recipe
OXO lists three thickness settings: 1 mm, 2.5 mm and 4 mm. Treat those as three choices, not a continuous range that lets you select any thickness between them. Think about which setting you would actually use before adding another tool to the drawer.

If your recipe calls for a different thickness, do not assume this model will provide it. These are the manufacturer’s stated settings, not measurements from our kitchen or a promise that every slice will be identical. Choose it for flat slicing, rather than expecting diced pieces, julienne strips or vegetable spirals.
Decide whether the manual workflow suits you
The tool has a handle, a slicing surface and a separate food holder. The listing photo shows one hand on the handle and the other on the holder. That is a different routine from using a knife, even when the meal stays the same.
The blade is very sharp. Always use the food holder, keep the tool away from children and follow the instructions supplied with this model. Using the holder does not make blade handling risk-free.

Do not buy on the assumption that every ingredient’s size or firmness will suit it. Check the supplied guidance for the produce you plan to slice.
Plan where the slices will collect
The over-bowl image gives you a practical question to answer: would that arrangement work with the bowl and workspace you already have? Allow room to hold the tool, move the food holder and collect the slices. The photo cannot confirm fit or stability with your own bowl.

Use the bowl and working area you already have as the starting point, rather than buying extra pieces to copy the photo.
Count the care and storage, too
OXO specifies a stainless steel blade and labels this model dishwasher safe. That does not remove the need to handle a sharp cutting surface carefully or keep track of the separate holder. Follow the supplied care and storage instructions rather than treating the photos as a cleaning tutorial.

Decide where both pieces will live before ordering. For occasional slicing, the extra cleanup and storage may outweigh the appeal of choosing a thickness setting.
Buy for a recurring job, or skip it
- Consider it if you regularly want flat fruit or vegetable slices at one of the three stated settings and are willing to use the holder and care for a sharp tool.
- Skip it if a knife or slicer already works well, slicing is occasional, or you want a different cut or thickness.
