Laundry Hamper or Carry Basket: What Does Your New Home Need?

Comparison guide

Choose the Joseph Joseph Tota 60L if you need a regular place to collect and separate laundry, with removable bags to take to the washer. Choose the Rubbermaid Hip-Hugger 1.5-bushel basket if you already have a collection spot and mainly need to move clothes. They solve different parts of laundry day, so you may need one, both or neither.

Start with where your laundry goes

If clothes collect in the bedroom but the washer is elsewhere, consider whether sorting before wash day would actually help. The Gray Tota has two 30-liter compartments under one lid. You could separate two groups of laundry as you go, then lift out a bag when it is time to wash. Still check garment care labels; two compartments cannot account for every washing requirement.

The trade-off is a standing hamper that needs a permanent spot and assembly. Its footprint is about 15.6 inches square, and it stands about 28 inches high. Leave space above it to remove the lid and lift out a bag. A low shelf overhead could make that routine awkward.

Choose a carry basket for the trips between tasks

If laundry already collects in a suitable hamper, the White Rubbermaid Hip-Hugger may fill the remaining gap: carrying clothes to the washer, drying area or closet. This is the single 1.5-bushel plastic basket, with an open top, three handles and a curved side designed for hip carrying.

It does not provide separate sorting compartments or a lid. That makes it a different purchase from the Tota, rather than a cheaper version of the same storage system. It can also hold waiting laundry if an open basket already works for you.

Think about where the empty basket will live between trips. Check the selected listing's dimensions against that space and the route you use. A basket that is convenient beside the washer may still be awkward around a narrow doorway. We have not tested carrying comfort or how either product feels with a full load.

Do you need both?

  • Bedroom collection, occasional trips to your washer: The Tota's removable bags may cover both sorting and carrying. Try that arrangement before adding another basket.
  • An existing hamper, frequent trips between washer and drying area: A carry basket is the more direct addition. Keep the hamper you already have.
  • A shared laundry room or laundromat: Consider the entire trip, including doors, stairs and anything else you carry. Neither liter capacity nor bushel capacity tells you how much weight you should carry at once.
  • A working basket and no sorting problem: Keep it. Moving house alone is not a reason to replace your laundry setup.

Allow for cleaning and assembly

The Tota comes flat-packed. Its bags are machine-washable according to their labels, with the plastic rims removed first. The fabric exterior is wipe-clean only; wipe the lid, rims and frame with a damp cloth. Do not sit on the hamper or place heavy objects on it.

Choose the exact versions below: Tota Gray, 60L, dual compartment, model 50001; or Rubbermaid White, 1.5 Bushel, model FG299787WHT. Do not assume another size or a newer Tota version has the same construction.
