Everyday Dusting: Washable Head or Disposable Refills?

Comparison guide

OXO means washing and drying a reusable head. Swiffer means keeping disposable refills on hand. Choose the routine you will actually keep.

The short answer

Choose the OXO Good Grips Microfiber Hand Duster if you want to wash and reuse the head and will make time to dry it. Choose the Swiffer Dusters Starter Kit if skipping that laundry step matters more and you are comfortable buying and discarding replacement heads.

That is the main trade-off: OXO adds head care; Swiffer adds an ongoing refill supply. Neither is an automatic winner.

Start with the surfaces you actually dust

Think about the open ledge of a bookcase, a side table, or the spaces around objects on a shelf. A handheld duster makes sense when you want a handle between your hand and those ordinary, reachable surfaces. Move fragile objects aside rather than threading a tool through a crowded display.

These are dusting choices, not tools for scrubbing sticky marks or soaking up spills. Nor does either short-handled option solve a high-ceiling reach problem. Pick for the furniture you can reach safely, not a ceiling fan that requires climbing on a chair.

For delicate finishes, follow the furniture maker's care instructions before using either tool. Soft-looking fibers are not a guarantee against scratches on every surface. Screens, unfinished surfaces, and fragile coatings need their own care guidance.

OXO: wash the head, then let it dry

The OXO has a flexible, double-sided microfiber head that detaches from the handle. OXO describes its handle as soft and non-slip; we have not tested grip comfort. OXO specifies a cold machine wash without fabric softener or bleach, followed by drying without heat.

That suits a household with a laundry routine and somewhere to air-dry the head. The drawback is the pause between washing and having it ready again. Reusable does not mean maintenance-free, and an eventual replacement head may still be needed. There is no fixed wash lifespan or savings estimate behind this recommendation.

Swiffer: keep the handle, replace the head

The Swiffer uses specially coated fibers on disposable heads. The selected starter kit includes one handle and five heads. Treat these as disposable refills, not washable microfiber covers.

This is the more natural choice if laundering a duster head is the step you would put off. The trade-off is remembering to replenish the supply and dealing with used heads. Five heads is a package count, not a promise of five cleaning sessions or a particular number of rooms.

For either option, consider where the tool and its supplies will live. A reachable storage spot helps more than buying a second duster that stays buried in a closet.

Buy a complete tool, not the wrong refill

For the washable option: look for the OXO Good Grips Microfiber Hand Duster, model 1335180, sold as one complete hand duster. This is not the refill-only head or the extendable model. Check that any future replacement head explicitly fits your handle.

For the disposable option: look for the Swiffer Dusters Starter Kit, model PGC11804KT, with one handle and five disposable heads. Do not substitute a refill-only box or assume a different starter pack has the same contents. If you already own a compatible handle, check whether you need only refills instead.

For a different kind of cleanup

Loose kitchen-counter crumbs call for collection rather than dusting; see our compact dustpan guide. Dirt in reachable fixture edges or shower tracks is a separate scrubbing job covered in our detail-cleaning brush guide.
