DAP DryDex 8 fl oz: A Small Tub for Drywall Nail Holes
October 17, 2026
DAP DryDex is a practical choice for a few small nail holes in dry, sound indoor drywall if you want a visible cue for when the filler is ready to finish. It goes on pink and turns white as it dries. The version here is model 12328, a single 8 fl oz tub, not a squeeze tube or a repair kit.
You will still need a clean putty knife and a plan for the painted finish. White filler does not guarantee a match to your wall's color or texture.

Choose the tub, not the look-alike size
Look for 12328 and 8 fl oz, also described as a half pint. The listing includes other quantities and some shared product images, so check the selected size before ordering. This recommendation is for one tub of compound; it does not include the tools shown in application photos.
If you already have suitable, usable spackling, you may not need another product. DryDex's main convenience for this job is the drying-color indicator.
Check the repair depth before filling
For small repairs less than 1/8 inch deep, DAP says one application is usually sufficient. Deeper repairs need multiple thin layers, with each layer fully dry before the next. The 1/8-inch threshold refers to depth, not the width of the hole.

Keep this purchase to minor surface repairs. It is not a structural repair or a substitute for a repair that needs backing. DAP also excludes skim coating and joints that expand and contract.
Use the color cue, with time to spare
- Start with clean, dry, structurally sound drywall. Work between 50°F and 100°F. Stir the compound thoroughly before use.
- Use a clean putty knife to press the compound into the hole, then draw the knife firmly across the surface to remove excess. Use the layering approach above if needed.
- Wait for the filler to turn white before another application, sanding, or painting. DAP gives approximately 1–5 hours, depending on temperature, humidity, and fill depth. Do not treat that range as a fixed appointment for painting.
If the dried repair needs smoothing, DAP recommends wet sanding to reduce dust. Use adequate ventilation, protective gloves, and eye protection. If you dry-sand, follow the safety data sheet's requirement for NIOSH-approved respiratory protection and avoid breathing the dust. These directions concern the new filler, not stripping or sanding old wall coatings.
Allow for the painted finish

Follow the container directions and your paint's surface-preparation requirements. Do not assume the package's patch-and-prime wording means every finish can skip primer. This guide covers dry indoor nail holes, not exterior or moisture-exposed repairs.
Clean wet compound from tools with water, close the tub tightly, keep it out of reach of children, and store it away from extreme heat or cold. For this small job, the reason to choose DryDex is straightforward: the pink-to-white cue makes it easier to judge when to move on, while the tub lets you apply the compound with your own knife.
