Buy a temporary guest bed only after confirming that your guest accepts the arrangement, the exact bed fits the usable room, and you can manage it during and after the visit. If a suitable existing or borrowed bed already covers the stay, there may be nothing to buy.
The awkward part of hosting in a small apartment often comes the next morning. A bed that fits between the sofa and coffee table may occupy the route to the bathroom. A storage bag may arrive with the mattress without fitting your closet. Work through those details before choosing a size or waiting for a sale.
This guide covers temporary arrangements for adult overnight guests. It does not cover infant or child sleep arrangements or beds needed for medical care.
1. Agree on the sleeping arrangement before shopping
Confirm who is staying, how many nights they will be there, and which sleeping arrangements they are comfortable using. Ask whether the proposed bed height and getting up from it will work for them. Do not assume a guest will accept an air mattress because it is convenient to store.
Look at what is already available:
- A usable guest bed or sofa bed your guest is happy to use
- An air mattress you already own, with its correct instructions and working equipment
- A suitable bed someone can lend you for the actual visit dates
Existing pillows, blankets and sheets can help complete a sleeping arrangement, but they do not by themselves settle whether the sleeping surface works for the guest. Check those two questions separately.
If none of the available arrangements works for the person staying, settle another accommodation plan before buying accessories for an unsuitable bed.
2. Measure the floor you can actually use
Start with the room as it will be used during the visit. Decide where the coffee table, chair or other displaced furniture will go. Moving everything into a hallway simply moves the space problem.
Use the selected model's inflated or fully opened length and width. A size name such as Twin or Queen is not enough to establish a fit. Mark the outline with removable tape suitable for your floor, or lay out a tape measure to show each edge.
Then check the room with the outline in place:
- Open the room door through its normal swing
- Open the closet, drawers and cabinets you will need during the visit
- Walk from the guest's proposed sleeping position to the bathroom and room exit
- Check whether other occupants can move through the apartment without stepping over the bed
- Identify where bags, shoes and bedding will go so they do not fill the remaining route
- Check the setup space and separation from furniture required by the bed's own instructions
The mattress rectangle is only the starting point. It is not a minimum-room-size formula or a guarantee of a safe layout. If essential doors or routes are obstructed, try a different position or a smaller suitable bed before deciding to buy.

A Twin-size example
Intex lists its 13-inch Twin Comfort-Plush air mattress, SKU 67765ED, at approximately 39 inches wide by 75 inches long by 13 inches high. The listed maximum load is 300 pounds, and a built-in electric pump and carry bag are included.
Use these manufacturer-listed dimensions to sketch an initial footprint; check the room and your guest’s needs before choosing a bed.

Before relying on this bed for a visit, confirm its packed measurements against your storage space and obtain the correct manual for the exact bed and pump. An included carry bag does not establish a storage fit. This example illustrates size; it is not an operating guide or a purchase recommendation.
3. Decide what happens each morning
Can the bed stay in place throughout the visit? If so, check that the daytime room still works for everyone using it.
If it must be put away every morning, plan the whole reset: removing bedding, deflating or folding the bed as instructed, moving it to its temporary location, and setting it up again that evening. Bedding needs a daytime home too.
For a bed you already own or can borrow, rehearse that routine before the guest arrives. Find out whether you can handle it and where everything actually goes. An advertised inflation time does not include clearing furniture, arranging bedding or restoring the room.
If daily setup is impractical, reconsider the room or sleeping arrangement. Buying a larger storage bag will not create the missing daytime space.
4. Check the pump and bedding for the exact bed
Before buying or accepting a loan, find the model number on the bed and match it to the manufacturer's instructions. Ask the lender to provide those instructions and any required parts.
Check the manufacturer's maximum load for that exact bed against your intended use before buying or borrowing. Stay within the stated limit. If what the rating covers is unclear, ask the manufacturer rather than assume.
For a powered bed, confirm:
- Whether the pump is built in, included separately or not included
- The power supply required by the actual pump label
- Whether the planned setup location has suitable access to that supply
- The manufacturer's inflation, deflation, operating-time and cooling instructions
- Any instructions for cord routing, placement and storage
Do not substitute a similar-looking model's directions. A manufacturer's estimated inflation time is not permission to run a pump indefinitely. If the correct manual or power requirements remain unclear, resolve them with the manufacturer before relying on that bed for the visit.
Also check the sheets you already have against the chosen bed's dimensions and the sheet maker's pocket-depth information. A matching size name alone does not confirm how a fitted sheet will sit on a raised air mattress. Buy replacement bedding only after identifying a real gap.
5. Measure the bed after the visit, too
Pick a specific storage place before ordering: a particular shelf, cupboard or other space that will remain available. Measure its usable length, width and height, plus the opening the packed bed must pass through.
For a borrowed bed, ask the owner to measure it packed in the way it is normally stored. For a new bed, look for manufacturer-confirmed packed dimensions or ask for them. Check what a dimension describes: a shipping carton, an empty bag and a bed repacked after use are different things.
Do not force a tighter fold or squeeze the bed into a smaller container to make an assumed fit work. Follow its storage instructions. Allow for bedding that also needs to be put away.
If the packed size is unknown and your storage space has little flexibility, treat that as an unresolved buying question. Choose another suitable arrangement or get the missing measurement first.
6. Choose whether to reuse, borrow or buy
Use what you have when your guest accepts it, the equipment is usable, and the room works with it in place. You may need only to check the bed and prepare existing bedding.
Borrow when a suitable bed is available for the right dates and you can verify its model, condition, setup and size. Agree on collection and return, and make time to check it before arrival day. A borrowed bed still needs the same room and equipment checks as a new one.
Buy when there is a genuine sleeping-space gap and you have resolved the guest, room, daily-reset, power and storage questions. Check the actual seller's delivery timing and return conditions before paying. Do not assume you will be able to return a used bed after the holiday.
Pause the purchase if the bed would obstruct essential routes, the guest does not want the arrangement, the equipment's requirements are unclear, or there is nowhere suitable to keep it. Those are reasons to change the plan, rather than add more accessories.
Before the guest arrives
- Confirm the final sleeping arrangement with them
- Check the exact bed and its instructions in advance
- Set up the room and walk the routes with the bed in place
- Prepare clean, suitable bedding and a place for the guest's belongings
- Confirm how the room will work the next day
- Keep an alternative arrangement in mind if the bed or layout proves unsuitable
Make those checks against the guest's arrival date. A possible holiday discount is useful only if it still leaves time to obtain and check the bed.
The goal is a workable overnight stay. If you already have a suitable way to provide one, skip the new mattress, extra pump and bundled accessories.
