Sony WH-CH720N: What Changes When You Plug In the Cable?
The WH-CH720N changes modes when its audio cable is plugged in. See what happens to Bluetooth, call input, noise canceling and the earcup controls.
The Sony WH-CH720N can handle Bluetooth computer calls and wired listening, but plugging in its supplied audio cable changes the controls and call setup. Bluetooth stops working while that cable is connected. Treat it as a separate listening mode—not a way to keep the same wireless calling features without Bluetooth.
Plug in for listening, not the same call setup
The Black WHCH720N/B comes with two separate leads: a 3.5 mm headphone cable and a USB charging cable. Sony specifies the supplied headphone cable for wired listening, with its L-shaped plug at the source device.

For a phone call in this wired setup, Sony tells you to answer on the phone and speak into the phone’s microphone; the caller’s voice comes through the headphones. That is different from using the headphone microphone over Bluetooth. It is not a blanket compatibility claim for computer audio jacks, adapters or meeting apps.
Leave power off—or keep noise canceling
The audio cable lets you listen with the headphones switched off. To use noise canceling or Ambient Sound Mode while plugged in, switch the headphones on. Wired listening therefore does not always mean battery-free operation: the extra sound modes still need power.

There is another change you can feel at the earcup. With the cable connected, the volume and playback/call buttons do not work. Adjust volume and pause playback on the source device instead. The NC/AMB button needs the headphones powered on.

Return to Bluetooth for computer calls
Sony’s computer-call instructions use a Bluetooth connection. In the calling app, choose the headphone’s call connection (HFP/HSP) for both speaker and microphone, rather than the music-only A2DP connection.
The labels vary by computer and app: you may see a hands-free headset name or simply WH-CH720N. Sony notes that some apps may not offer the function and that behavior can vary by computer. This is a configuration requirement, not a promise that every meeting app will work.
Two connected devices still take turns
For a laptop-and-phone Bluetooth setup, enable the two-device connection option in Sony’s companion app. Multipoint keeps two devices connected; it does not blend their audio. To switch music sources, stop playback on the first device, then start it on the other.

The useful distinction is simple: the cable provides another way to listen, while Bluetooth provides the documented computer-call setup. If your purchase depends on wired headset-microphone input for a particular computer, do not treat the included audio cable as confirmation of that capability.
