Do You Need a Tabletop Spiralizer?

Product guide

One manual tabletop spiralizer with three blades and a blade box.

Choose a tabletop spiralizer for a recurring preference for vegetable spirals or ribbons. Keep your usual method if the extra preparation, cleanup and storage are not worthwhile.

If you regularly want long vegetable spirals or broad ribbons, the OXO Good Grips 3-Blade Tabletop Spiralizer is worth considering. The reason to add it is the cut you want, not a need to replace every other prep tool.

Keep a spiralizer you already like, or stick with slices and chopped pieces if those suit your meals. This manual tabletop tool adds setup, sharp parts to clean and something else to store.

Choose the cut you actually want

The three interchangeable stainless steel blades offer a 1/8-inch spaghetti cut, a 1/4-inch fettuccine cut and a ribbon cut. Think of a meal you already make and the shape you would use in it. An appealing serving photo is a weaker reason to buy than a recurring preference for that cut.

This is a dedicated spiralizing tool, not an all-purpose chopper. OXO says it is not for meats or cheeses.

Check the produce you usually buy

OXO's instructions call for straight produce, or straight sections, at least 1.5 inches in diameter. That matters if your usual carrots are thin or your vegetables are curved. Buying the tool does not make every piece of produce suitable.

Allow for preparation before spiralizing. The instructions require flat, even ends, so you still need a knife and cutting board. If selecting suitable produce and preparing it feels like too much work for an occasional ribbon garnish, keep your usual cut.

Plan the working space

The rotating handle turns the produce, while a separate side handle advances it toward the blade. The base uses a lever-operated suction cup. Do not assume it will grip every counter surface; follow the setup instructions supplied with the tool.

Leave working room around the handles and a place for the spirals to collect. Food, knife and cutting board are not included.

Think beyond the space occupied by the base. You need room to turn the handle, move the food holder and collect the cut vegetables in front. A crowded counter may make that arrangement inconvenient even if you have somewhere to store the tool.

Count the cleanup and storage

The blade, food holder and rotating handle come off for cleaning. OXO's instructions list the spiralizer parts and blades as dishwasher safe, with one specific exception: hand-wash the blade box. Plan for cleaning and drying the separate pieces, not just wiping the outside.

The box stores on the base, but the whole tool still needs a home. OXO warns that the blades are very sharp and calls for care during assembly, use, cleaning and storage. Keep the spiralizer and all its components away from children. Follow the supplied instructions rather than treating the photos as a handling guide.

Buy for a regular preference

Consider it when you often want spirals or ribbons, your usual produce fits the requirements, and the setup and cleanup seem worthwhile. Skip it when an existing tool works well, you prefer another cut, or the extra parts would discourage you from using it.
