Do You Need a Manual Food Mill?
Keep your current method if it gives the result you want. Consider a manual food mill only for a recurring need to press food through discs and separate solids.
If your sieve, masher or usual method already gives you the result you want, keep it. Consider a manual food mill when pressing food through a disc and separating unwanted solids is a recurring job your current setup does not handle well.
This guide covers the OXO Good Grips Food Mill, model 1071478: one hand-cranked mill with three interchangeable discs. It has a stainless steel inner bowl and a plastic exterior, rather than an all-stainless body.
Start with the job you would repeat
A food mill presses food through the installed disc into a separate bowl or pot. OXO’s instructions use tomato sauce as an example of leaving skins and seeds behind. That example does not establish that every disc will retain every kind of seed or solid.
If you only want to mash food and do not need to separate solids, your masher may already cover the job. If pressing through your existing sieve works for the amount you prepare, another tool may add more parts without solving a problem. An occasional puree alone is not a reason to buy.

Account for the manual work
The crank is the drive: you turn it by hand. You also assemble the disc and crank mechanism, arrange a receiver underneath, and take the parts apart afterward. OXO’s release mechanism allows the crank assembly to come out so you can change discs or disassemble the mill.
Consider this workflow only if you are willing to assemble, crank, clean and store the parts. Skip it if you are looking for a motor to do the turning.

Plan for the receiver and three discs
The three included discs offer different openings. Choose for the food and task using the supplied instructions; the number of discs is not a guarantee of a particular texture or yield.
You supply the receiving bowl or pot. Check that the mill’s legs have stable support on your actual receiver rather than assuming it fits every rim. The receiving vessel, food and other props in the listing photos are not included.

Leave room for cleanup and storage
OXO lists the mill as dishwasher safe. That does not remove the need to disassemble it and deal with food left on the disc and mechanism. Follow the supplied care instructions rather than assuming a particular rack position or wash setting.
The legs fold under for storage. You still need space for the bowl, handle, crank assembly and discs. If cupboard space is tight, confirm the current unit’s dimensions before ordering; folding legs alone do not establish a fit.

Buy for a recurring gap, or keep what works
Consider this mill if you repeatedly need disc pressing and solids separation, have a suitable receiver, and accept the manual work and extra parts. Keep your current method if it already produces the result you want. Skip a new mill if the need is occasional or you do not want the assembly, cranking, cleanup and storage.
Before ordering, confirm 1 EA / Food Mill, not the four-pack.
