Leatherman Wingman: Scissors Access, Pliers and the 14-Tool Count

The Wingman keeps its knife and scissors accessible with the plier handles folded. Here is what its 14-function count—and blade lock—actually mean.

The Leatherman Wingman lets you reach its knife and scissors without unfolding the plier handles. Open the body when you need the pliers. That split—not simply the “14 tools” label—is the useful distinction if you want cutting, gripping and small screwdriver functions in one unit.

The trade-off is that those functions do not all share the same access or locking arrangement. The Wingman is not a set of 14 separate locking tools, and its screwdriver tips are not an interchangeable-bit kit.

Scissors now, pliers when you unfold it

The folded shape keeps the plier head inside the handles while the outside knife and scissors remain accessible. The manufacturer's package-tie photo shows the scissors extended with the plier body still folded; you do not have to open the pliers just to reach them.

For gripping, the handles unfold around the plier head. Leatherman lists spring-action needlenose and regular pliers: those are different gripping sections of the same head, not two separate pairs packed inside.

The plier handles can stay folded when accessing the outside tools; using the pliers requires opening the body.

Read the tool list as functions, not separate pieces

The 14-tool count includes the plier functions, cutters, a combo knife, spring-action scissors, openers, a ruler, a file and screwdriver tips. It describes what is built into the unit; it does not mean 14 tools that all open with one hand or lock independently.

  • Screwdrivers: Phillips, medium and small drivers are built-in implements. Choose this layout for those fixed tips, not as a holder for a collection of interchangeable bits.
  • File: the wood/metal file is a filing surface, not a folding saw. A saw is not on the Wingman's tool list.
  • Knife: the combo blade has plain and serrated sections. Leatherman specifically lists a locking knife blade; that does not make the entire tool set all-locking.

The listed implement is a wood/metal file, not a saw. This supplier demonstration is not our performance test.

The blade lock and the manufacturer's “one-hand operable features” label answer different questions. One concerns holding the knife open; the other concerns access. Neither is a reason to assume every implement works the same way. Follow the supplied instructions for each tool, keep hands clear of cutting paths and store it away from children.

The pocket clip is included; a sheath is not

The replaceable pocket clip is part of the tool. A sheath is sold separately.

This guide covers the stainless-steel Wingman 831426, one unit. It has a replaceable pocket clip. Leatherman lists the sheath separately, so do not mistake a different bundle's photos or description for what comes with this model.

Its particular appeal is the combination of outside-accessible scissors and knife with fold-out pliers and fixed small tools. The important limitation is equally specific: you are choosing that built-in assortment, not an all-locking tool set, a saw or a bit-driver system.

This guide uses manufacturer documentation and supplier images, not hands-on testing.
