iFixit Magnetic Project Mat: Keep the Screw Locations, Too

Product guide

The selected purchase is one white mat and its correctable pen. The 20 areas are printed on a flat surface.

Keep location notes beside small screws with the iFixit Magnetic Project Mat. See what its writable grid adds, what comes with it and its limits.

Choose the iFixit Magnetic Project Mat when the hard part is remembering where each small screw came from. Its writable grid lets you keep a location note or sketch beside each group. That is the reason to choose it over an unlabeled parts dish. The tradeoff: printed lines provide no raised barriers between groups.

What needs to stay with the screw?

A dish collects loose screws. A divided tray separates groups. This mat adds a place to write what each group belongs to, such as a cover or bracket, without a separate sheet of notes. Choose according to the information you need to preserve, not just the number of parts.

Concept illustration comparing an unlabeled pile of screws with location-labeled groups
Concept illustration, not the product or a repair map. Labels preserve context; the pencil is only a note-making symbol.

The grid has 20 printed areas, but you decide what the labels mean. The supplied Staedtler Lumocolor correctable pen supports reusable notes; do not assume an arbitrary permanent marker is a substitute.

Hand drawing a position sketch beside grouped parts on the project mat
A sketch can preserve position information next to a group. This supplier scene is not our hands-on test.

The notes still need an accurate source

The mat records your project information; it cannot establish the correct screw location or repair sequence. Follow the device’s permitted servicing guidance and precautions. The handwritten phone examples below demonstrate the writing surface, not a map to copy for another device.

Magnetic attraction does not establish that every small part will stay put. Keep the mat level rather than treating it as closed storage for transport. Do not rely on this model for anti-static, heat, electrical or battery protection.

This guide covers the white Magnetic Project Mat, manufacturer part IF145-167-4, with the correctable pen. It is a separate purchase from iFixit’s driver kits, FixMat and Anti-Static Mat. If your buying problem is preserving the origin of several small groups, the writing surface is the feature to focus on.
