First Coffee Setup: French Press or Pour-Over?

Steep and press without papers, or pour through a paper filter: compare the supplies and cleanup each first coffee setup needs.

Choose the Bodum Brazil for a steep-and-press routine without paper filters. Choose the Hario V60 for hands-on pouring through a paper filter. The Brazil leaves a pot and reusable filter to clean. The V60 needs compatible papers and a separate receiving cup or server. Neither heats water or works automatically.

Bodum Brazil: steep first, then press

The pick here is one black, nominal 34-ounce Brazil French press, model 1548-01US. Coffee brews in its glass vessel; the plunger and reusable filter separate the grounds when you press. You do not need paper filters or a separate vessel underneath while brewing.

This suits someone who would rather wash reusable parts than keep buying papers. The tradeoff is handling a glass pot and removing wet grounds from it. The listed “8 cups” does not mean eight ordinary mugs, and 34 ounces is not a promise of finished coffee yield.

Grounds go into the pot for immersion brewing. Follow the supplied instructions; this image is not a complete brewing tutorial.

Follow the supplied instructions: use coarse grounds and never force the plunger. Excessive force can send scalding liquid out of the pot. Check the glass before use and do not use it if scratched, chipped, or cracked. This pot is not for stovetop heating.

Hario V60: take an active role in pouring

The alternative is one red plastic V60 Size 02 dripper, model VD-02R. Choose it if you want to pour manually and are happy to keep compatible V60 Size 02 paper filters on hand. Its cone, spiral ribs, and large bottom opening are part of that paper-filter brewing setup—not a guarantee of better-tasting coffee.

This is a dripper, not a complete coffee kit. Do not count on a kettle, server, or supply of filters being included. Choose a heat-safe cup or server that supports the dripper securely and holds the amount you plan to brew. Hario’s “1–4 cups” sizing is a maker’s size label, not a promise of four large mugs.

Check the supplies before choosing

Both methods need separately heated water and suitable ground coffee. For the Brazil, plan on coarse-ground coffee. For the V60, check that the papers fit V60 Size 02; a generic “#2” label alone is not enough to establish compatibility. Reuse suitable equipment you already own rather than treating either brewer as a reason to buy a whole new kit.

Choose the cleanup you will actually do

The Brazil leaves grounds in its pot and calls for cleaning the plunger and filter assembly after use. The V60’s paper holds the grounds for removal, but you still have the dripper and receiving vessel to clean. That is a difference in chores, not a measured claim that one is faster.

Pick the Brazil if avoiding paper refills matters most; pick the V60 if active pouring and removing a paper filter fit your routine better. Before ordering, confirm the exact model, color, size, package contents, seller, delivered total, and arrival estimate.
